THE BRITISH BULLDOG CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

1927

The first of an interesting series of judging competitions for amateurs will be held by the British Bulldog Club early in the new year. Mr. Averay has promised a trophy to the winner. Mr. W. D. Averay is at present on holidays in the Blue Mountains. Before leaving Sydney, he intends to take advantage of numerous invitations from members of the New South Wales Bulldog Club to visit their kennels. Mr. G. H. Smith (hon. secretary) advises me that Mr. Allen Drake Brockman, of New South Wales Bulldog Club, hopes to attend a meeting of the B.B.C. at an early date. Mr. Drake Brockman is an honorary member of the B.B.C. of S.A. (Observer Sat 8 Jan 1927)

Arrangements are well in hand for the British Bulldog Club’s club’s second annual ball, which is to be held in February, at the Royal Institute for the Blind, North Adelaide. Mrs. R. A. McNicholl, of Hindmarsh, advises me that her bull bitch, Molly Dare of Salford, has whelped a nice even litter of four puppies (two dogs and two bitches) to Sudworth Justice. Unfortunately, one dog pup died. The other three are healthy little things. They are white in colour with brindle markings. (Saturday Journal Sat 8 Jan 1927)

An instructive evening was spent last Thursday when the members of the B.B.C. held an amateur point judging competition., This was just a preliminary for the competition to be held early in March, when Mr. Avery’s trophy will be competed for. The secretary outlined the points of the breed and number of points allotted. Mr. H. Rance’s dog Brooksby Ambassador was benched, and one of the new members. Mr. F. Incley, won with 69½ to the judge’s 71 points. (Observer Sat 26 Feb 1927)

The second annual ball of the British Bulldog Club was held on Saturday at the Royal Institute for the Blind, North Adelaide. Mr. Tom King’s orchestra rendered selections for the dancing. The supper tables were decorated with mauve and pink asters and multi-coloured phlox. (The Advertiser Wed 2 Mar 1927)

The annual meeting of the British Bulldog Club was presided over by Mr. F. E. Weston at Majestic Chambers on Thursday night. The secretary (Mr. G. H. Smith), in presenting his annual report and balance sheet, said interest in the club was increasing. He pointed out the wonderful progress the club had made since its last general meeting. He said 33 new members had been enrolled, and still applications for membership are being made. Bulldog fanciers are beginning to realize that unity is strength, and are joining up with this club, which is affiliated with the South Australian Kennel Association, and can offer fanciers the chance of exhibiting at six championship shows a year. During the year this club held several social gatherings, which were well attended, and on each occasion supper and a good musical programme was provided. The club’s parade, held in November, was a great success. There a trophy was provided for each class and won outright. The Kennel Association also offered a cup for beat exhibit (to be won three times).

The Christmas tree and social held in December catered for both children and grown-ups. Each child was presented with a nice toy and a bag of lollies from Father Christmas. The second annual ball was also a social and financial success, and special thanks are due to the social committee for the interest and energy they bestowed upon it. Several lecturettes and point judging evenings have been enjoyed by the member’s, which have proved very instructive and educational. Special thanks were tendered to Mr. W. Perry, who acted as judge at the parade, and who lectured, and also Mr. W. D. Avery for adjudicating at the point judging. The committee especially thanked The Saturday Journal (“Lady Kitty” and “Barker”) for publishing from, week to week our club’s doings and various social functions in its invaluable columns. The report and balance sheet were adopted.

Officers elected: Patron, Mr. W. Perry; president, Mr. F. E. Weston; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Hocking and W. D. Avery; auditors, Messrs. R. Francis and J. Schurgott; solicitor, Mr. G. L. Mortimer; veterinary surgeon, Mr. W. Perry; treasurer, Mr. H. Proctor; secretary, Mr. G. H. Smith; committee Mesdames G. H. Smith and H. Proctor; Messrs. J. Schurgott, R. Francis, P. Lees, R. J. Savage, A. H. Vogelsang, C. Beal and H. Avery. (The Advertiser Fri 18 Mar 1927) (Observer Sat 2 Apr 1927)

We have received the show schedule of the first championship show to be held on May 14. There are liberal prizes and many trophies, including the New South Wales Bulldog Club’s bronze medal for challenge winning dog and bitch. A point judging competition is to be held on Wednesday when members will compete for a valuable trophy donated by Mr. McAneray, who will adjudicate. A fortnight hence a lecturette will be given by the club’s veterinary surgeon, Mr. W. Penny, dealing with the “Care and diseases of dogs.” The secretary (Mr. G. H. Smith) reports that things are in full swing for the championship show. Schedules are obtainable from the secretary, Mr. Williams, optician, or Mr. H. R. Proctor, King William Street. First, second, and third distinction ribbons have been promised for all classes by the following gentlemen: Messrs. G H. Smith, F. E. Weston, and W. D. Averay. A record number of entries are expected as members’ dogs are in the pink of condition. There are some really fine specimens.

The press correspondence of the club describes a visit to the “Bondi Kennels,” Westbourne Park. Sturdy Dick of Bondi, who looks just as nice as ever he did, is in the pink of condition. He will be shown. Noticed also was the very nice white and brindle bitch Perfection (Peggy her owner affectionately calls her). She will make her first appearance in the ring tor Mrs. Holzberger at the championship show. Mrs. Mathias, who unfortunately, will be in Western Australia at show time, has made arrangements for her pup to be shown in his respective classes. (Observer Sat 16 Apr 1927)

A committee meeting will be held at Mr. W. D. Averay’s residence, when matters concerning the forthcoming show will be discussed. The outlook for a successful show is promising. Mrs. A. A. Smith reports that her brindle bitch Te Het Merrie Maid has whelped a very nice even litter of eight puppies – all brindles and brindle pied. The writer has this week seen Mr. Kersley’s Sudcliff September Dot This promising young dark brindle bitch has been entered in all her classes for the championship show. Mr. Kersley has donated a trophy for best Australian-bred dog, and Mr. H. R. Proctor has offered a trophy to be competed for at our next point-judging evening. (Saturday Journal Sat 23 Apr 1927)

A fine assortment of trophies has been donated to the British Bulldog Club for competition at its championship show. The list includes: S.A. Kennel Associations Cup, to be won three time); New South Wales Bulldog Club bronze medal (challenge winner); Mr. Allen Averay’s trophy (best bitch in show, won three times); Mr. W. Perry’s trophy (three times); Mrs. Helen G. Smith’s trophy (three times); Mr. Hartley Averay’s trophy (three times). Trophies to be won outright from Mr. Allen Drake Brockman, N.S.W., Turramurra, Mrs. Hocking, Mrs. J. M. Helpman, Mrs. A. A. Smith, Mrs. Vogelsang, Mrs. F. E. Weston, Mr. Voglesang, Mr. Proctor, Mr. W. Viney, Mrs. Hocking, Mr. Savage, Mr. Schurgott, Mr. G. H. Smith. (Observer Sat 23 Apr 1927)

The secretary (Mr. G. M. Smith) reports excellent entries for the forthcoming show. Several dogs and bitches will make a first appearance. The judge will have a hard afternoon sorting them out. Some of the trophies have been on view during the week. Only the running trophies were shown, as space was limited. The club can be congratulated on the number and quality. Entries received included Mrs. Allan Drake Brockman’s (N.S.W.) well-known Ch. Wimbasstone. This dog has won under the English judge, Mr. Stanley Hunt, and many other judges, and was awarded the open and challenge a few weeks ago at the Sydney Royal Show. The club can boast of two champion dogs being shown Ch. Wimbasstone (N.S.W.), and Gr. Ch. Sturdy Dick of Bondi. New members admitted include Mrs. E. McEwin. of North Norwood, and Mr. Petherick, of Welland. (Observer Sat 14 May 1927)

THE BULLDOG SHOW. Fine Display at Wayville. After many vicissitudes the British Bulldog Club of South Australia has come into its own as an entity among specialist dog clubs. By successfully holding its first championship show at Wayville on Saturday afternoon it may be said to have attained its full majority. Founded in 1910 by Mr. W. Perry and other enthusiasts, the club has greatly increased in membership, and is now affiliated with the S.A. Kennel Association, thus obtaining the right to exhibit at seven championship shows in the year. More than 30 valuable specimens of the English national breed were benched or paraded on Saturday. The patron (Mr. W. Perry), who is also the veterinary surgeon, remarked that the numbers wore gratifying and the quality all round good. There had been big augmentation of the ranks of breeders and in the number of promising young dogs. There was a great future for the club. Similar sentiments were expressed by the enthusiastic President (Mr. F. E. Weston) and secretary (Mr. G. H. Smith), who declared that the bulldog was rapidly regaining popularity. Other officials who took a lively interest in the welfare of the club included Vice Presidents Messrs. W. D. Averay and F. H. Hocking, the committee (Mesdames E. H. Proctor and H. G. Smith, and Messrs. J. Schurgott, R. Francis, P. Lees, E. J. Savage, A. H. Vogelsang, C. S. Beale, and H. Averay), Treasurer, Mr. H. R. Proctor, and the Solicitor, Mr. C. L. Mortimer. That widely known terrier fancier Mr. T. F. Haines. of Dudley Park, was judge, and his work was facilitated in the ring by Messrs. H. Averay (Judge’s Steward), A. Averay and R. Francis (Ring Stewards), H. R. Proctor (Head Steward), A. H. Vogelsang (Bench Steward), and J. Hawkesworth (Award Steward).

The judge handled the dogs carefully and decided promptly. Describing the classes as a whole, Mr. Haimes said they were a fair average lot, with a few somewhat lacking in ring education, and a trifle fat. He was impressed with the quality in Mr. W. Avcray’s Sudcliff Rival, a July puppy by the imported sire, the late Rotherwood September ex Snowdrop of Sudworth, bred by Messrs. G. H. Smith and Averay, which he described as of the right size, with beautiful front legs and feet, good barrel, and typical face and ears, and well, educated. That dog went through all his classes, winning as novice dog. puppy dog, junior dog, maiden dog, graduate dog. intermediate dog, limit dog, Australian-bred and open dog, and won several trophies, including the challenge certificate for dog, the Bulldog Club of New South Wales bronze challenge medal, and the S.A. Kennel Association Cup, as the best exhibit in the show. In the bitch division a round of successes was secured by Mr. G. H. Smith’s Snowdrop of Sudworth, whelped in March 1924, by Rocco ex Nantung Mascotte, bred by Mr. Locke. She was first in the classes for maiden, graduate, intermediate, limit, Australian-bred and open bitches, besides getting a leg-in in competitive trophies as best maiden bitch, best bitch in Show, the association challenge certificate for bitches and the Bulldog Club of New South Wales bronze medal for challenge winning bitch. Mr. Haimes described her as beautifully boned, with good front and head, a little fat, but throughout a typy specimen. The other principal prizewinners in the dog section, were Mr. J. Shurgott, Mrs. E. H. Proctor, -Mr. R. H. Bassett, Mrs. A. A. Smith. Mr. H. W Rance, and Mr. E. J. Savage. Prize ribands in the bitch classes were distributed among Messrs. G. H. Smith, J. Schurgott, F. Kersley, P. Lees and Mesdames H. G. Mathias, Helen G. Smith, R. Francis, and A. A. Smith.

In the open dog class Mr. R. H. Bassett was second with Sudcliff Rotheretep; and Mr. H. W. Rance third with Brooksby Ambassador. In the open bitch and Australian-bred classes second honours went to Mr. F. Kersley for Sudcliff September Dot and third place to Mrs. Helen G. Smith for Sudsworth Glory. There was keen competition in each event.

Mr. Haimes described Mr. W. D. Averay’s Sudcliff Rival, which won all events in his class, as one of the best Bulldogs seen in South Australia for some time. Sudcliff Rival was low on the ground, had beautiful bone, and a good head and ears. Mr. H. G. Smith’s Snowdrop of Sudworth, which was declared the best bitch in the show, was described by Mr. Haimes as having a fine bone, front, and a good head, but was shown a little fat. ORIGIN OF BULLDOG CLUB.

Mrs. A. E. Carey. North Adelaide, writes: “Will you allow me to correct an error in your article on the British Bulldog Club of S.A. This club was formed early in 1923 on my personal application to the S.A.K.A. As the S.A. Bulldog Club had withdrawn from affiliation, it was desirable for the breed to have a voice on the council of S.A.K.A. The necessary number of financial members were obtained by me. I applied for permission to form this new bulldog club, and asked that it be called The British Bulldog Club of S.A.”

BRITISH BULLDOG CLUB NOTES. At the last meeting a hearty vote of thanks was moved to the showground officials who had everything prepared so well for our recent show. Special thanks were accorded the press (The Register and The Saturday Journal) for the very encouraging remarks and the prominence given the report of the show. The prize distribution will be held on June 9, at the Royal Cafe. Membership is growing so rapidly ‘that the former hall used for social nights is not large enough. Mr. W. B. Viney, who has become the new owner of a bitch called “Queen of the North”’ but unfortunately was unable to exhibit it at the recent show, advises that it has been mated to Mrs. A. A. Smith’s Albaree Adsum. This bitch had a fine career as a puppy in the showring but has not been shown since. New members enrolled since the show include Mr. A. G. Parker, of Gladstone; Mr. W. J. Torr, of Redhill; Mr. C. H. Wheeler, of Parkside, and Mr. W. Adams, of Reynella. (Sat 11 Jun 1927

The British Bulldog Club held its prize distribution on Thursday evening at the Regal Cafe. The trophies made a creditable display. The programme was excellent, and dancing made the evening more enjoyable. About 120 were present. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the President, Mrs. O. J. Holzberger, as the oldest member, presented prizes to the winners. Little Joyce Holzberger presented bouquets to the lady artists, Miss Lilburn, Miss Molly Dally, Mrs. Tucker, Mrs. Holzberger. Mr. C. S. Beale occupied the chair.

Mrs. R. Francs reports the mating of her bitch Manly Princess to Mr. Proctor’s Hawthorn Allenby, and Mrs. Holzberger’s bitch Sudworth Perfection to Gd. Ch. Sturdy Dick of Bondi. (Observer Sat 25 Jun 1927)

BRITISH BULLDOG CLUB: Schedules are out for the 34 classes of the grand parade. A good muster of dogs is expected. A lecture on bulldogs will be given by Mr. W. Perry. 77 Members and friends have been cordially invited to attend. (Saturday Journal Sat 6 Aug 1927)

BRITISH BULLDOG CLUB NOTES. The above club have secured the services of Mr. R. Richardson, the well-known breeder of bulldogs, to judge at their parade. Mr. Richardson has travelled much, and has judged in all the States and also New Zealand. Some years ago Mr. Richardson owned and bred some of the best bulldogs in South Australia. The secretary has received an invitation to view the latest importation to this State from Mr. G. Horn, who has started his kennels with a nice young brindle bulldog which he has imported from New Zealand. He intends to join the club. Another invitation is to view an importation from Tasmania. This is a nice young bitch secured by Mrs. Rutzon, of Largs Bay. (Observer Sat 6 Aug 1927)

British Club’s Second Parade: The British Bulldog Club of South Australia held its second parade at the Wayville showgrounds on Saturday, August 20. This body has made good progress during the past two year’s but one would have liked to have seen a larger attendance. Some good dogs were paraded, but competition in the bitch section was weak, mainly owing to stud difficulties or illness. On account of business engagements Mr. T. Richardson was unable to fulfil his promise to act as judge, and his place was taken by a club member in Mr. H. R. Proctor, who was making his debut in the showring. He acquitted himself creditably and even if all his awards did not please every exhibitor, he was fearless in his decisions. For example, when in two of the bitch classes palpable errors in the distribution of tickets were made, he did not hesitate to recall them on the grounds that he had made a mistake in the numbers. Mr. Proctor said it was hard to separate some of the ticket winners and was very pleased with the promising puppies paraded by Mrs. Holzberger. The club has lately been strengthened by several new members, and the honorary secretary (Mr. George H. Smith) was gratified to see two from the . country in Messrs. Parker and Torr of Gladstone, represented with candidates. The absence of Mr. A. J. Taplin’s Sudworth Beauty which had been entered in 14 classes, weakened the competition in the point judging classes. There were fine open dogs. Albaree Odsum winning from Brooksby Ambassador with General Buller third. The placings were similar for best show condition dog. There were also fine open class bitches; Snowdrop of Sudworth winning again for Mr. G. H. Smith, with Mrs. Helen G. Smith’s Sudcliff September Sue second and Mrs A. A. Smith’s Te Het Merrie Maid third. For best show conditions Mr. F. Kerley scored with Sudcliff September Dot. Mr. R. E. McNicholl gaining second award with Sudcliff Pride of Salford. Mr. H. Averay acted as outside ring steward, Mr H. G. Steer as award steward and Mr W Perry as hon. Veterinary surgeon and Ring steward.
