THE BRITISH BULLDOG CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

1926

The British Bulldog Club of South Australia is showing enterprise in raising funds for its competitive show, while at the same time cementing friendships and promoting the social spirit. To that end the committee has arranged to hold its first annual dance in the Royal Institute for the Blind on February 27. The press correspondent of the club (Mrs. Helen G. Smith) reports that arrangements are well in hand to make this function a success, as proceeds are to be devoted to the purchase of trophies. Tickets may be obtained from the joint secretaries (G. H. Smith or R. E. McNicholl), any member of the club, or any secretary of any affiliated. Support is sought from ” all the dog-world people.” (Saturday Journal Sat 13 Feb 1926)

After having been in precarious existence for about 10 years, the British Bulldog Club of South Australia held its first Parade at Jolly’s Pavilion, City Bridge, on Saturday afternoon. The secretary (Mr. R. E. McNicholl) has only been in office a few months, but he states that there has been a very substantial increase in the number of members of the club and they were all displaying much interest in their dogs and were breeding from good stock. Some of the young dogs were showing considerable promise. Mr. McNicholl stated that he was more than satisfied with the first parade on Saturday and the club intended to conduct a show and two parades next season. The judge was Mr. W. Perry who is a recognized authority on bulldogs and who was closely associated with the club when it was formed. Mr. Perry stated that he was pleased to see the club was making such progress. The dogs on parade included some really good types although in some instances they were not quite in the best of condition for show purposes. At the conclusion of judging Mr. Perry explained to the exhibitors his reasons in several instances for awarding the prizes as he had done, and he showed the points and faults of the various competitors. The Kennel Association Cup for the best exhibit on parade which has to be won three times was gained by Mrs. A. A. Smith’s Australian bred dog Albaree Adsum. Mrs H. G. Smith’s trophy for the most successful exhibition, resulted in honours for Mr. W. Avery, largely through the excellence of Sudcliff Rival. When the set program had been completed, post entry events for point judging of certain characteristics were carried out. (The Advertiser Mon 8 Nov 1926, Observer Sat 20 Nov 1926)

Presentation of Trophies: Members of the British Bulldog Club of South Australia and their friends spent a most enjoyable evening at Square Buildings, Victoria square, when the prizes won at the recent parade were distributed. In the unavoidable absence of Mrs. F. E. Weston (wife of the president) Mr. W. Viney handed the trophies to the winners. This honor was conferred upon Mr. Viney as he was one of the members when the club was formed in 1909. Another original member present was Mr. W. Perry, who judged the parade. Members of the club presented Mr. Perry with a pipe in recognition of his services as judge. Musical items were rendered by Miss. Edna Male. Mrs. Hocking, and Messrs. F. E. Weston and H. Hocking. Miss Roma Francis and Miss Dorie Kersley gave an excellent exhibition of step and toe dancing.   Supper was handed round, and the evening finished with dancing. (News Wed 1 Dec 1926)

Smith), Sudworth, Frederick Street, Welland, to enable the committee to purchase the toys, &c (Saturday Journal Sat 11 Dec 1926)
